ABOUT FARMING

At Salt Water Farms, farming is a way of life. We operate two farms in Narragansett Bay and one southwest of Land’s End, Newport, planting, growing and harvesting Quonset Point®, Beaver Tails®, Newport Cups® and Umami Oysters™ and rope-grown Blue Gold Mussels®.

Mason Silkes cleaning the deck of the F/V New HopeShellfish farming has been practiced for centuries all around the world. It is a clean, sustainable way to grow shellfish while respecting our fragile ocean environment.

The species being farmed and the methods used are site dependent. Bottom culture and racks and bags are typical of shallow water husbandry techniques. At deep water sites, the shellfish are suspended in the water column using trays, bags, socks, ropes and floats tied off to long lines that are either held at the surface or submerged. Salt Water Farms operates two farms in Narragansett Bay and one farm SW of Land’s End, Newport. We plant, grow and harvest Quonset Point®, Beaver Tails®, Newport Cups® and Umami™ Oysters and rope grown Blue Gold Mussels®. All of our shellfish is available exclusively through American Mussel Harvesters, Inc. located in North Kingstown, RI.
